Industry-Specific Hazardous Location Lighting Solutions

Every industry has distinct classified locations, specific hazard groups, and unique environmental conditions. We spec for your application — not the generic case.

Oil & Gas

Upstream, Midstream, and Downstream — We Spec for Each Zone.

From wellhead locations to refinery process areas, lighting requirements change with each classified zone. EcoLite-EXP provides Class I Div 1 explosion-proof fixtures for the most hazardous process areas and Div 2 rated systems for peripheral zones — with complete documentation for each. Our oil and gas product line addresses the full spectrum of NEC Article 500 classification levels encountered across upstream, midstream, and downstream operations, including the corrosion challenges of offshore marine environments.

Refinery process lighting must also contend with extreme temperature cycling, vibration from heavy rotating equipment, and aggressive chemical atmospheres. Our stainless steel and marine-grade aluminum housings are engineered for these environments, with corrosion-resistant finishes proven in hydrogen sulfide, chlorine, and caustic service conditions.

Common Applications

  • Drilling platforms
  • Pump houses
  • Compressor stations
  • Flare areas
  • Tank farms
  • Pipe racks
  • Marine / offshore platforms
  • Crude oil loading terminals
  • Gas processing plants

Petrochemical & Chemical

Lighting That Doesn't React to Its Environment.

Chemical processing facilities demand not just explosion-proof ratings but corrosion resistance to the specific chemical agents present. A fixture rated for Class I Div 1 will fail prematurely in a chlorine or hydrofluoric acid environment if the housing material is incompatible. Our fixtures use 316 stainless steel and chemical-resistant coatings proven in caustic, acidic, and oxidizing environments — selected based on the specific chemical service at your facility.

We work directly with your process engineers and EHS team to identify the appropriate enclosure material and coating specification for each location in your facility. Where standard housings are insufficient, we can specify polycarbonate or fiberglass-reinforced polyester options with equivalent electrical certification.

Common Applications

  • Reactor areas
  • Tank farms
  • Loading and unloading stations
  • Lab maintenance bays
  • Process corridors
  • Drum storage areas
  • Chemical blending rooms
  • Solvent recovery units

Mining & Minerals

Surface and Underground. Class I and Class II.

Coal mining facilities require Class II combustible dust ratings — coal dust is a Group F hazard that has caused catastrophic explosions throughout the industry's history. Underground mines bring additional challenges: impact resistance to meet MSHA requirements, low-clearance mounting in confined entries, emergency egress lighting compliance under MSHA 30 CFR, and backup lighting requirements for evacuation scenarios.

EcoLite-EXP covers both surface and underground environments. Our underground-rated fixtures are built to withstand impact, vibration, and the abrasive particulate environment of active mining operations, while surface installation products handle the temperature extremes and UV exposure of open-pit operations. All mining-applicable products include MSHA-compatible documentation for permit submissions.

Common Applications

  • Mine shafts and entries
  • Conveyor systems
  • Processing plants
  • Crushing and screening facilities
  • Coal handling areas
  • Preparation plants
  • Headframes and hoisting areas
  • Underground equipment maintenance bays

Pharmaceutical

cGMP Meets Hazardous Location.

Pharmaceutical facilities handling flammable solvents — typically Class I Division 2 zones — also require GMP-compliant construction with smooth, cleanable surfaces and no particle-trap geometries. A fixture that satisfies NEC but creates a contamination control problem is not an acceptable solution in a regulated manufacturing environment.

Our pharma-grade EXP fixtures meet both NEC hazardous location classification requirements and the cGMP construction standards under 21 CFR Part 211. Fixture surfaces are smooth, non-particulating, and compatible with IPA and other solvent-based cleaning agents used in pharmaceutical environments. FDA inspection-ready documentation packages are available upon request.

Common Applications

  • Solvent storage and dispensing areas
  • API manufacturing suites
  • Kilo labs
  • Dispensing suites
  • Solvent recovery systems
  • Classified clean rooms with solvent use
  • Chemical storage warehouses

Food & Beverage

Grain Dust Is More Dangerous Than You Think.

The grain handling industry sees Class II combustible dust hazards in elevators, silos, and milling operations. Grain dust is a Group G hazard — highly flammable when suspended in air at sufficient concentration. A single spark in the wrong location in an elevator leg or headhouse can be catastrophic. The history of industrial grain facility explosions makes this one of the most serious combustible dust applications in any industry.

EcoLite-EXP Class II fixtures are engineered to eliminate ignition risk in grain dust environments — with documentation to satisfy your insurance carrier, OSHA PSM requirements, and NFPA 61 compliance. Our fixtures meet the full dust-tight and surface temperature requirements to prevent grain dust ignition even under maximum loading conditions.

Common Applications

  • Grain elevator headhouses and legs
  • Flour mills
  • Feed processing facilities
  • Starch and corn wet milling
  • Sugar processing and refining
  • Malting facilities
  • Soybean processing plants
  • Pellet mills

Utilities & Power Generation

Battery Rooms, Substations, Generator Buildings.

Battery rooms present Class I Division 1 or Division 2 hydrogen hazards from VRLA (valve-regulated lead-acid), flooded lead-acid, and some lithium battery chemistries. During charging, flooded lead-acid systems generate hydrogen gas that, in poorly ventilated rooms, can accumulate to explosive concentrations. IEEE 484 and NFPA 70 both address battery room ventilation and electrical classification requirements that must be satisfied by the lighting specification.

Substations and generator buildings require corrosion-resistant, weatherproof fixtures meeting utility-grade standards and NFPA 70E electrical safety requirements for arc-flash exposure areas. EcoLite-EXP utility products are specified to the specific IEEE, NFPA, and NERC standards applicable to generation and transmission infrastructure, with documentation appropriate for utility asset management records.

Common Applications

  • UPS and VRLA battery rooms
  • Switchgear rooms
  • Transformer vaults
  • Generator enclosures and buildings
  • Outdoor substation lighting
  • Control houses
  • Diesel fuel storage areas
  • Turbine generator enclosures
